Last week was Friday, November 8, which also happens to be national STEM day. STEM or STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This is a day that has been around since 2015 and is designed to celebrate and inspire everyday activities, jobs, or learning experiences that involve STEM.
National STEM day was actually inspired by a Netflix series. The show is called Project MC2, and is meant to inspire young girls to explore STEM-related careers. In the show 4 girls work in a secret organization called NOV8 (pronounced innovate and explains why STEM day is on November 8), to protect the world.
Even though Project MC2 is only a 6/10 on IMDB, the point to inspire young minds to branch out into STEM is still there. The day is observed for this reason, and a great way to celebrate is by inspiring young people to branch out into.
“National STEM day is meant to inspire kids to explore and pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, art, and math.” writes Checkiday.com
There are many jobs that revolve around STEM that go all the way from a nurse practitioner to a mathematician. Whenever we ask kids “what they want to be when they grow up” they usually respond with a career choice that includes science, technology, engineering, or math. Helping your little sister to get inspired to work toward becoming an astronaut, or inspiring your younger cousin to take up a career in medicine is a great way to get involved in STEM
“Don’t let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.” stated astronaut Mae Jemison
That is what National STEM day is all about.
